Their 1984 recording "A Beautiful Friendship" featuring Don's quartet was a JUNO award winner, and was followed by "Witchcraft" (1986) a duo recording released by Just In Time records. The NYC based Abercrombie visited Toronto frequently to play with Don until the Montreal Bistro closed. The duo's performance last year at Chalkers (Jan. 2010) presented the opportunity for CBC radio to capture the exceptional interplay of these two masters. Between the two of them, they've performed with many of the jazz greats, including Milt Jackson, Lenny Breau, Art Farmer, Michael Brecker, Jim Hall, Gato Barbieri,Charles LLoyd and Gil Evans. Seeing John and Don create their music in the intimate setting at Chalkers is the perfect antidote for the Feb. blahs.
